Vapor Engines

Standard Rankine and refrigeration/heat pump cycle have relatively low thermal efficiency and coefficient of performance due to external and internal irreversibilities. The associated work loss can be significantly reduced by modifications of the cycles, which are the topic of this chapter. Specifically we discuss regeneration of boiler exhaust, steam cycles with internal heat exchange in open and closed feedwater heaters, and multi-stage refrigeration cycles.
