Introduction: Why Thermodynamics?

Modern life relies on energy, heat and work, and all related systems and processes are described by the laws of thermodynamics. Improvement and efficient operation of present and future energy systems rely on sound understanding and application of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic processes and the structure of thermodynamics are briefly discussed to prepare the stage for the technical discussion in the subsequent chapters.
