Consumption and Hybridity: One Big Green Thought or One Corporeal Merging

  • Jean Graham

摘要

Trans-corporeality is evident in the consumption of humans by trees. One type of consumption is the absorption of a human mind into “one big green thought.” Another is the carnivorous tree that consumes human flesh, an idea that represents both plant horror and the plant monster, whether the monster reflects Lovecraftian cultural concerns with race and immigration or the more recent fear of genetic modification, the latter in a series of young adult novels by M. R. Carey which also involve artificial intelligence, a concept that exists in tension with the series’ trans-corporeality.
