The deep and vast semiconductor ecosystem (rich forest) Japan has built and the close working relationship between suppliers and customers have helped Japan maintain its lead in materials and manufacturing equipment despite decline of its IC industry. This chapter describes this ecosystem to provide a backdrop to introduce the super-evolution of semiconductors that the author considers to be the future of the industry. It explains in detail the super-evolution of nature’s forest through co-existence and co-evolution that results in its richness and diversity. It further discusses how a similar super-evolution can help not only Japan’s but also the world’s semiconductor industry through global collaboration. The chapter closes with a discussion of imec’s strength which is also rooted in collaboration in a rich ecosystem.
