Mount Etna

Mount Etna, with a surface area of approximately 1500 km2, is a large stratovolcano with an alkaline basalt-Hawaiian composition (trachybasalt), located near the east coast of Sicily (latitude 37°30ʹ–37°55ʹ N, longitude 14°47ʹ–15°15ʹ E), bounded to the north by the Alcantara River valley, to the west by the Simeto River, to the south by the Catania Plain and to the east by the Ionian Sea.
