Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative pathway designed to reduce surgical stress for patients undergoing major surgery. ERAS protocols in different specialties show shorter length of hospital stay, fewer complications and lower costs compared to traditional perioperative care, but their role in reducing postoperative infections is still unclear. We describe the relationship between the elements of the ERAS protocol and surgical infection prevention based on the available literature. Integration of the ERAS program and preventive care bundles can produce a potential cumulative and synergistic effect in reducing the likelihood of postoperative infections.
