Current Technique and Instrumentation for SMILE

The ReLExRefractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx)® SMILE procedure is typically performed under topical anesthesia and can be divided into two steps: the femtosecond laser application and the manual removal of the lenticule. The femtosecond laser cuts are intrastromal, without any external corneal wound, and subsequently can be performed in a “clean” fashion, i.e., no disinfection needed. The second step requires sterility of the field.
