Exploring the Integration of Light and Music in Artistic Furniture Design: A Study in Interaction Design Informed by Children's Climbing Behavior

In the context of ongoing physical and cognitive development, the motor skills of children exhibit a continual enhancement. Notably, climbing behavior emerges as a prevalent learning activity among children aged 9 to 24 months, contributing significantly to the development of various muscle groups. However, owing to the inherent limitations in safety awareness and behavioral capabilities of children, conventional children's furniture often falls short in addressing the imperative of facilitating safe climbing and play. This deficiency renders young children susceptible to potential injuries and hinders their interactive experiences during climbing endeavors.To address this gap, our study introduces an innovative approach in the form of interactive children's climbing furniture equipped with light and sound elements. This design aims to create a secure environment where children can engage in climbing activities while fostering interaction through dynamic elements such as light and sound. The paramount objective remains to ensure the safety of the children throughout these interactive experiences.In a controlled trial involving 11 infants aged 9–24 months, we sought to gauge the acceptance and behavioral responses of children towards this interactive climbing furniture. Comprehensive observations were conducted to analyze and synthesize the outcomes of the trial. The experimental results demonstrated a notable increase in the duration of children's engagement with the interactive furniture, indicating a heightened willingness to accept and joyfully participate in this novel form of interaction. These findings underscore the potential of the proposed design to enhance both safety and enjoyment in children's climbing experiences.
