The Brother and the Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon

This text provides a guide for philosophical exploration using the very famous Korean folk tale “The Brother and the Sister who became the Sun and the Moon.” First, it introduces the story, briefly explains it, and then proceeds to introduce the philosophical ideas in the narrative. Children will read this story and experience fear, tension, amusement, and satisfaction. However, this story doesn’t simply conclude with the tale of a cruel yet foolish tiger and the fortunate survival of the siblings. Through philosophical exploration of the story, children can explore themselves and the world around them, pondering how to navigate a world that is not always peaceful and safe. Guidance for such exploration is offered in three philosophical themes: “Failure of Adults and Success of Children,” “The Fall of the Tiger and the Rise of the Brother and the Sister,” and “Primitive Sun-Moon Mythology and the Solar (Male) and Lunar (Female) in Male-Centric Society.” Within these themes, various philosophical ideas arise, including doubt, weakness, and strength, as well as good and evil, masculinity and femininity.
