Visual Ethnographic Analysis of the Transit Migration of Venezuelans in Huaquillas, Ecuador

Culture has been the subject of extensive scholarly inquiry, approached through diverse methodologies including textual analysis, iconographic studies, and field research. Central to this multifaceted exploration is ethnography, a specialized branch of science dedicated to the systematic study and detailed description of cultures. Ethnography encompasses not only the academic study of cultural phenomena but also serves as a robust methodology for gathering insights into the nature of social reality, the intricacies of interpersonal relationships within groups, and other sociocultural dynamics. One particularly compelling approach within this field is the utilization of visual mediums such as photography and imagery. This visual perspective offers a unique vantage point for extracting and interpreting cultural elements, enabling researchers to delve into the meanings, symbology, interpretations, and narratives inherent within a community’s visual testimony. Visual ethnography, therefore, stands as a powerful tool in the exploration of cultural landscapes. The document presented herein aims to employ visual ethnography as a lens to examine and elucidate the culture of Venezuelan migrants in transit through the community of Huaquillas, Ecuador, which lies adjacent to Peru. This analysis is predicated on the collection and interpretation of images and photographs obtained during fieldwork. The objective is to glean insights from these visual materials, offering a nuanced understanding of the migrants’ cultural milieu and experiences. Through this approach, the study seeks to contribute to the broader understanding of the dynamics at play within transient migrant communities and the socio-cultural tapestry they inhabit.
