A microscopic (statistical) view on particle movement is explained. First, the Boltzmann distribution is exemplified by the barometric formula. Then, particle duality is presented and the basic wave equation and its solution are described. An overview of Schrödinger’s equation is presented and the essentials of energy levels are shown. The partition function as a key quantity of the discussed molecular approach is defined. Links between the partition function and thermodynamic quantities, internal energy, Helmholtz energy, entropy and others are developed. A molecular-statistical interpretation of heat and work is given.
