Evaluation of NEPAD E-School Pilot in Kenya

NEPAD E-School pilot in Kenya took much longer than was anticipated. This study set out to evaluate the success of the E-School system using an adaptation of DeLone and McLean 2003 information system success evaluation model. This study undertook to determine the quality of the ICT infrastructure installed in NEPAD E-Schools and determine the infrastructure’s ability to provide the students with the ICT skills envisaged in the project’s objectives. The study design was a survey that covered all the six E-Schools in Kenya. A sample of 1,508 teachers and students were selected using stratified random sampling technique from the population of 5,186. Data was collected using questionnaires and an interview schedule. The study revealed that six dimensions of E-School were contributing towards its success. Contribution of the seventh dimension, user satisfaction could not be conclusively confirmed. The benefits of the E-School system are evident and encouraged parents to seek enrollment for their students with some parents contributing toward the cost of expansion of the E-Schools. The study recommended tracer study of the graduates of the E-School to further understand the effect of those schools on their adjustments to post-secondary school performance.
