In 1988, the Tech Act was enacted to foster assistive technology use by individuals with disabilities. In 2004, the Tech Act was reauthorized; AT devices and services including training on AT for students, caregivers, and educators were described. According to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, 20 U.S.C § 1400, 2004), AT services must be considered to meet the student’s needs. In 2022, the Assistive Technology Act was restructured and modernized to the 21st Century Assistive Technology Act. This update broadened the scope of AT services and increased collaboration among agencies. AT supports students with disabilities to access and participate in the general education curriculum, thus promoting inclusivity of students with disabilities. High-tech and low-tech devices in a range of areas including academics were identified for students with disabilities. Also, the AT decision-making process is used at the IEP meeting to determine a student’s need for AT devices and services. For students with disabilities, AT enhances the quality of students’ lives. Future directions in AT should include continued teacher, caregiver, and educator training. Moreover, the misconceptions about the use of AT must be dispelled.

摘要
