Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics Education for Students with Visual Impairments

In today’s classrooms, the study of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) content areas cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity among learners of all ages, abilities, and grade levels. Amid the rapid growth in STEAM education content areas, it is essential to acknowledge and address the challenges faced by students with visual impairments (i.e., those who are blind or have low vision). Despite the transformative potential of STEAM education, students with visual impairments may encounter a myriad of challenges when navigating STEAM-related concepts, tools, and activities. Traditional instructional materials in the STEAM content areas often rely heavily on visual representations, diagrams, and illustrations, rendering them inaccessible to students with visual impairments. This chapter acknowledges and addresses the challenges faced by students with visual impairments in STEAM content areas. The heterogeneity of the population of students with visual impairments and how students who are visually impaired are supported in public education are explained. This chapter, therefore, explores the landscape of STEAM education for students with visual impairments, highlighting inclusive strategies, innovative technologies, and best practices that foster access and meaningful participation.
