This chapter explores the essential role of tactile methods of reading and writing, specifically braille, in the education and communication of students who are blind or have low vision. The structure of braille, emphasizing the significance of braille cells, and the transition to the Unified English Braille (UEB) code established in 2012 are introduced. Pedagogical strategies for teaching braille, including the importance of five essential components of reading, which are crucial for effective literacy instruction are discussed. The chapter highlights the impact of effective braille instruction on students’ self-expression and academic achievement, noting that students who are proficient in braille often experience better educational and social outcomes. Additionally, integrating assistive technologies, such as braille notetakers, enhances learning experiences. By providing a comprehensive overview of tactile reading and writing methods, this chapter serves as a vital resource for educators and practitioners dedicated to fostering literacy and communication skills among students who are blind or have low vision.
