Language Policy in the Social Media - Efforts to Revitalize Indigenous Languages in Peru

The context of this work is the revitalization of indigenous languages in Peru. The main research question is what concrete measures can be observed in practice to revitalize the indigenous languages Quechua and Mochica, in which contexts they occur, and what are the main motives of the actors involved. To this end, the current social and legal situation of indigenous languages in Peru is described, and their historical development is traced. Two languages have been deliberately chosen to understand the variety of problems and challenges faced by indigenous languages in Peru, given their extreme different language situations. The current threat situation in which many indigenous languages find themselves and the consequent need for more protection and revitalization make this topic a relevant research field within linguistics. The work is articulated in three parts. In the first part, the theoretical basics of language policy, multilingualism, and language revitalization are covered. In the second part, the language situation and historical development of language policy in Peru are explained. In the third part, exemplary revitalization aspirations for the Quechua and Mochica languages are shown.
