Deviation: Communicative Dynamism in Branching Direction

Written communication is less spontaneous than spoken discourse, and marking can be subjective. Structure and coherence taught at the textual level may not guide the writer to iron out linguistic practices hindering comprehension. The concept of the ‘degree’ of Communicative Dynamism and ‘varied’ Branching Directions in a paragraph allows for a better understanding of features like a ‘Subject Theme’, a ‘local Theme’, and the clause-initial different from clause-final thematic elements in clauses. Otherwise, deviations from a hierarchical linear norm show the scope of a ‘multinorm’ communication style reviewed in this chapter at the functional level of the grammatical elements.
