Introduction

Primary language contact creates practices that stylistically deviate from the writing schema of the first (L1) variety of the English language. Schemata refers to how longer pieces of extended discourse are constructed and sequenced; discourse is about language use in a specific domain (education, business, tourism, etc.). Culturally influenced linguistic practices affect the application of everyday grammatical elements at the level of syntax and semantics. Awareness of writing schema is not about enforcing language rules to iron out inequalities, but about the comprehension of multinorm linguistic practices, which, as a ‘nativeness’ or natural tendency, tend to creep into one’s written communication. This book provides an understanding of the ‘multinorm’ writing schema in an academic context. Therefore, it aims not to describe the varieties of English but, using language-based tools, to provide an applied approach to evaluate how linguistic variations, understood as one’s ‘linguistic behaviour’, accommodate nativized tendencies, which are prompted by the cultural conventions of one’s primary language.
