Microstructure Characterization and Sliding Wear Behaviour of HVOF Sprayed Tungsten Carbide: 12% Cobalt and Chromium Carbide: 25% Nickel Chromium Coatings

The present investigation focuses on the application of various carbide-based powders, specifically tungsten carbide (12% cobalt) and chromium carbide (25% nickel-chromium), onto medium-carbon steel substrates using the high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) spraying technique. The acquired coatings underwent SEM/EDS and XRD characterization to examine their morphology and identify the phases present. Additionally, measurements of hardness and porosity were performed on the coatings. The sliding wear behavior was evaluated using a ball-on-flat linear reciprocating test. The results indicate that the HVOF-sprayed coatings of tungsten carbide (12% cobalt) and chromium carbide (25% nickel chromium) exhibited lower porosity, higher microhardness, and a more significant coefficient of friction when compared to the base substrate.
