The final analytical chapter focuses on the question of formation: How do we produce national minds? Benefitting from research on the cognitive and emotional dimensions of socialization, enculturation, and education, it scrutinizes ‘national’ education systems. It discusses how we develop our sense of the individual self as a component of our collective selves. It emphasizes that our minds are trained to operate as integral elements of a collective (national) mind rather than as isolated knowledge processors in a vacuum. In this respect, this chapter investigates the instrumental development of our cognitive and emotional schemas as part of our complex process of becoming a member of a nation.
