The Emotional Regime of Nationalism

Recent studies emphasize that emotions are not separate from cognition. On the contrary, emotion and cognition work together as vital components of human perception and decision-making. Following this idea, this chapter focuses on the rules of feeling and expressing emotions in national culture, paying particular attention to implicit feeling rules for different social groups. It aims to reveal the interventions of both implicit social institutions and formal political organizations that are built to regulate the emotional status quo in nation-society. Although the book focuses mainly on the majority, this chapter provides examples from the experiences of minorities in Turkey, showing diverse ways of navigating the emotional regime of nationalism.
