Pollution Solutions: Removing Waste from Landfills

Landfills are a significant environmental concern, as they cause environmental pollution, contribute to climate change, and use a lot of land. As landfills grow in size and number, the idea of recovering resources from old landfills has become popular called landfill mining. Landfill mining requires materials to be separated first, which can be achieved using mechanical methods such as milling, sieving, and crushing, and using artificial intelligence. Using artificial intelligence requires training the system to recognize objects and materials. After separation, materials can be put to good use. For example, glass waste can be used for concrete, bricks, tiles, foam glass, water filtration, and sandblasting. Also, landfills can be used to generate electricity, either by capturing and using gases produced by decaying materials or by burning materials that cannot be recycled.
