Towards Hybrid Modelling and Simulation Concepts for Complex Socio-technical Systems

Complex socio-technical systemsSocio-Technical Systems have many challenging facets, comprising multiple, highly interconnected, and highly diverse technical and social components. Each entity represented by these components comes with many perspectives, methods, and tools developed in the supporting communities to address the subset of overall challenges the entity is concerned about. Various works on cross-disciplinarity have addressed coping with such diverse entity viewpoints within a community. While technologies have been developed to address multiple views technically, new methods of participatory modellingParticipatory modelling are needed to capture the inputs of social groups that are usually not familiar with computational support devices but whose lived experience and views are pivotal for understanding the socio-technical systemsSocio-Technical Systems, such as underserved community and groups in socially unfavourable situations. These approaches may help cross “the final mile” between these groups and researchers by serving two purposes: getting the necessary research input and explaining the research results to the community. This chapter provides an overview of the conceptual framework, some useful tools and methods, and open research questions that still need to be addressed by the hybrid modellingHybrid modelling and simulationSimulation community.
