Imagining a New Gender Contract for Care
摘要
Care and caring are not only inalienable features of our lives, but they are also essential to the sustainability of our economy, society and individuals’ well-being. The recent pandemic has emphasised how important care is. In other words, care is the glue that keeps us together and ensures that our world is, and will continue to be, sustainable. In this chapter, we discuss the emerging EU measures in this area—in particular, the EU Care Strategy—their potential and their shortcomings. We argue that, although care is now clearly on the EU agenda, the EU cannot be complacent, nor can it afford to lose momentum. The EU must take leadership in this area as a matter of urgency, and the chapter puts forward some suggestions on how to move forward. Until a clear commitment and concrete measures are in place, any intervention will continue to be empty rhetoric.
