The Impact of Inter-State Disputes on Environmental Sustainability and Human Security: The Case of the North Natuna Sea

The boundary dispute between Indonesia and Vietnam on the limit of their exclusive economic zone gives rise to different maritime security threats and sustainability in the North Natuna Sea. The former threat relates to the traditional and human security dimension. Meanwhile, the threats of sustainability come in the form of pair trawling and cross-boundary illegal fishing by both Indonesian and Vietnamese flagged fishing vessels. This chapter aims to depict the relationship between maritime security and ocean sustainability using the present case of the North Natuna Sea. To that end, the authors begin by identifying the concept of maritime security and ocean sustainability from the perspective of the Indonesian Government. Drawing on the relationship model proposed in Chap. 2 of this volume, the relationship between maritime security and ocean sustainability is found to be interdependent and mutually disruptive.
