Coupling of Peridynamics with Finite Elements

This chapter presents a coupling approach for the solution of equilibrium and field equations with uniform and non-uniform discretization in a commercial finite element analysis framework, Ansys. It is based on the variational principles. The PD and FE regions share the same nodes along their interface without any constraint conditions and/or an overlap zone. It is a general framework to perform bond-based (BB), ordinary state-based (OSB), and non-ordinary state-based (NOSB) PD analysis coupled with traditional elements. MATRIX27 elements native to Ansys are used for the PD region and the traditional elements for the remaining region. This coupling approach does not suffer from any unphysical concentrations near the interface in either steady-state or transient analysis.
