Consults and Handoffs
摘要
Consults and handoffs are types of medical communication that require succinct and accurate transfer of information. Requesting a consult is when a member of the primary care team contacts a subspecialist for assistance with a patient. Asking a clear question is critical to ensuring that the consultant is able to provide the requested help. Handoffs occur between primary care team members at times of shift change and are the process by which information is passed from one medical provider to another. It is also the transfer and acceptance of patient care responsibilities. These types of communications require organization and preparation. This brief chapter will review common pitfalls of novices, provide tips for success, and review two helpful mnemonics.
