Respiratory Interventions in Emergent and ICU Settings

Critically ill neonates and children frequently require supported respiration, either due to primary respiratory disease or as a sequela of systemic disease processes. The core priorities of respiratory support are to achieve adequate gas exchange (oxygenation/ventilation) and reduce work of breathing while minimizing iatrogenic injury. This chapter will review the modalities, indications, and procedural and care considerations pertinent to the use of respiratory support in intensive care settings.
