Newborn Care

Clinical issues in the normal newborn provide a unique set of challenges. Understanding of routine newborn care should begin with a firm understanding of the transitional period and then progress to understanding normal findings and common abnormalities. Major components of routine newborn care include delivery room and transitional care, newborn assessment including a comprehensive review of maternal history and a complete physical examination, prophylaxis to prevent serious disorders, universal newborn screening, family education, and discharge evaluation.
