Age-Based Strategies for Physical Exams

Although the actual physical exam for pediatric patients may not vary much from adult patients, the approach may vary significantly depending on the age of the patient. The physical exam must be age and developmentally appropriate. Pediatric examiners will need to be keen observers and can obtain information by watching the patient’s movements and behaviors. This chapter will review age-based strategies for a successful pediatric exam.
