The Power of Play

Working with children in medical settings is one of the most challenging and most rewarding experiences for healthcare providers. Establishing a respectful and trusting relationship with the child and their caregivers is a key step in crafting a successful outcome for the child and a valuable experience for all: patient, family, and healthcare team. There is good evidence that good rapport and communication lead to improved clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and compliance with treatment. Relationships with pediatric patients differ significantly from those in adult care, as clinicians are working to develop the trust of both the patient and their adult caregiver simultaneously. Valuable skills in this effort include (1) how to communicate and establish rapport with children; (2) the importance of verbal and nonverbal communication; and (3) use of specific helpful tips and tricks to incorporate play into bedside interactions.
