摘要

The increasing interest in the circular economy highlights its potential in addressing the environmental, economic, and social issues inherent in traditional linear production and consumption systems. Simultaneously, the rise of smart cities represents a pivotal shift in urban development, utilizing technology and innovation to improve urban life and promote sustainability. This chapter examines the role of the circular economy in the sustainable evolution of smart cities. It investigates the complex interplay between circular economy practices and the development of smart cities, using a case study of upcycling initiatives in Cape Town, South Africa, as an example. The study uncovers several key themes, including innovation, cultural value preservation, the importance of local networks, environmental awareness, and the generation of social and economic benefits.
