Digital Twin: A Transformative Tool for Smart Cities

摘要

The concept of digital twins (DTs) has attracted considerable attention from scholars owing to recent breakthroughs in information and communication technology (ICT) since it can potentially bring revolutionary changes in several sectors. The term “Digital twin” pertains to the digital portrayal of a tangible object, which can replicate its physical characteristics via platforms and real-time data exchange. Digital twins, in conjunction with the Internet of Things, fifth-generation wireless networks, blockchain, collaborative computing, simulation, and artificial intelligence technologies, provide significant prospects for the reformation of the existing urban government paradigm toward smart cities. Digital twins are widely regarded as a novel and crucial foundation for developing contemporary smart city infrastructure. Smart cities use the integration of Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance the quality of life for their residents. Due to its intricate nature, implementing these technologies poses a challenging endeavor, necessitating the ongoing acquisition, consolidation, and examination of data. Therefore, adopting a systematic strategy that focuses on digital transformation is essential to address urban challenges effectively. Substantial endeavors are being made to construct city information models that facilitate encoding urban entities and their interconnections that help in decision-making processes. The successful management of diverse and abundant information necessitates using a shared knowledge foundation strengthened by extensive vocabularies and ontologies. This chapter analyzes and interprets the significance of digital twin technology within the context of smart cities. It investigates the potentially transformative impact of digital twin technology on the construction sector, highlighting its significance as a game-changing technological advancement. Furthermore, it examines several viewpoints about the function of digital twins inside this sector and describes how the digital twin might contribute to advancing innovative city development.
