The Left Inferior Parietal Lobule: Anatomy, Function, and Surgery

Knowledge of morphological and functional anatomy is crucial for optimal resection of intraparenchymal tumors in the left dominant inferior parietal lobule. This chapter reviews the basis of gross anatomy and the main clinically evident functional aspects observed during awake mapping, which enables the surgeon to determine resection boundaries with the goal of obtaining maximum resection with minimum permanent postoperative deficits. These boundaries include anatomical structures inside and around the inferior parietal lobule, including white matter fasciculi. The ability to visualize and understand intrinsic cerebral anatomy, even when important structures are hidden in the parenchyma, is fundamental to guide our actions efficiently and avoid damage to critical areas. A clear and accurate mental image of anatomy is surely one of the most valuable skills in the brain surgeon’s arsenal.
