History of Neurosurgical Anatomy

This chapter provides an overview of the historical progression of knowledge and concepts in neuroanatomy from ancient times to the present day. Early insights into brain structure and function emerged in ancient Egypt, Mesoamerica, Greece, and Rome based on observation, experimentation, and anatomical dissection. Key figures like Alcmaeon, Herophilus, and Galen made foundational contributions. Progress stalled during the Middle Ages due to religious prohibitions on dissection but resumed during the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods with seminal work by Vesalius, Varolio, Pare, and Willis. The nineteenth century saw critical developments including cortical localisation theories and advances in a microscopic study of the brain by Golgi and Ramón y Cajal. Landmark discoveries continued through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, thanks to innovations like electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and computational methods as well as pioneering researchers like Penfield, Brodmann, and Milner. The chapter highlights how technological advancements coupled with an enduring spirit of scientific inquiry have continuously refined and expanded our understanding of neuroanatomy over millennia.
