Orbit Tumors: Anatomy and Surgical Approaches

The orbit contains and protects the eyeball, which is indeed a prolongation of the central nervous system. All the muscles and neurovascular structures directly related with the visual function, and some of them “en passage” to different regions, are contained in a volume of less than 30 mL. Orbit lesions are generally benign, and surgery can potentially cure the disease and alleviate very uncomfortable symptoms. A precise understanding of the orbit region’s intrinsic anatomy remains mandatory to design and perform safe surgical procedures which offer enough exposure and minimize the risk of functional and cosmetic complications.
