Brain Plasticity and Neurosurgery

  • Igor L. Maldonado

摘要

As our understanding of brain connectivity deepens, it reveals the intricacies of neural circuitry responsible for cognitive and noncognitive skills. This chapter details how these interconnections are integral to the dynamic nature of the brain, constantly adapting and reorganizing to optimize performance and compensate for damage or functional deficits when the critical structures are preserved. Understanding these phenomena fuels advancements in medical research, rehabilitative strategies, and brain–computer interface research, ultimately enhancing our ability to harness the brain’s remarkable plasticity. This knowledge is indispensable for neurosurgeons who are tasked with determining the optimal equilibrium between resection and preservation. Neuroplasticity may radically transform our understanding of therapeutic aggressiveness in the near future, leading to personalized treatment strategies tailored to individual patients’ needs.
