In (Dedekind, 1897b), Richard Dedekind recalled how he was led to the notion of Dualgruppe, formally equivalent to our lattices, which he introduced there for the first time: For many years, I have been busy with these questions, but I was compelled to do so not by logic but by the theory of these systems of numbers which I call modules.
