An Overview of Chinese Language Learning and Teaching in the Canadian Context

While Chinese language teaching and research in the context of foreign languages exhibit various similarities, this chapter delves into the distinctive Canadian characteristics, including multilingualism and multiculturalism, the education system, regional variations in Chinese language needs, Chinese-English bilingual programs, Chinese community schools, Chinese language teachers in schools, and Chinese education at the post-secondary level. Furthermore, this chapter proposes directions for Chinese language teaching and research in Canada. Its primary objective is to provide a succinct overview of the unique aspects of Chinese language teaching in Canada and outline specific goals to accelerate development in both the teaching and research domains.
