Change did not come easily. I had the privilege of being deeply involved in this process. In the beginning, our meetings were small and discussions related to accomplishing our goals. We were vocal, sometimes even loud if necessary, to get our viewpoints across, and at the same time enjoy a beer, and perhaps a cigar. How times have changed! We ultimately established the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery (ABPNS), the Accreditation Counsel for Pediatric Neurosurgical Fellowships (ACPNF), the Neurosurgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics. We thereby gained our own identity, enabling us to establish training requirements for fellowship programs and certify appropriately trained fellowship graduates. Establishing our own journal furthered the development of our specialty and aided in our quest to be recognized as a subspecialty by our adult colleagues. Although many of our adult colleagues did not look upon us favorably at the time, the ABPNS has since become integrated within the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). We have, however, maintained our independence. Certification of Pediatric Neurosurgery is given by both the ABNS and the ABPNS. It was personally gratifying to be a part of this process. I look back on it with great pleasure, knowing that we accomplished something for the greater good.
