摘要
The author recounts vignettes of how he was rescued from utter dereliction as a child by his physician father’s push for him to become a doctor, and the completely fortuitous circumstances in which he later took up pediatric neurosurgery as a calling. The narrative goes on to capture some salient features of his ever-growing immersion in the study of the juvenile spine and especially spinal dysraphism, spanning four decades and straddling two continents. Its first aim is to amuse, but if it could be accused of embedding a hidden message for young aspirants, it would be to seek out the “inexplicable,” question the conventional wisdom, and never surrender till finding a rational answer based solidly on science. The author‘s career-long journey has not ended, for he is still teaching in London.
