At first, when I introduced the concept of minimally invasive endoscopic surgery for the treatment of craniosynostosis, we encountered a great deal of animosity, pushback, and resistance from our very own colleagues in pediatric neurosurgery and plastic surgery. Nevertheless, we endured and forged ahead. As I think of this one patient, I often wonder what would have been of her physical and mental health had her parents agreed to the status quo and waited months to treat her. An untreated elevated intracranial pressure, progressive physical deformities only to be followed by one or two very invasive and risky cranial calvarial reconstructive surgeries, most certainly would have had a different outcome. I fully doubt that her life would be what it is today. So, as I now contemplate, I realize that if she had been the only patient that I had ever treated, my life would have been worth living.
