As I have reflected on my contribution to this collection, to present one special thing of mine in neurosurgery, I come to conclude that I have a fairly austere view of what we do. Any neurosurgical operation is a potentially lethal endeavor. That is important to remember, and that the only easy operation is one that has been completed. A surgeon has an obligation to do an operation with clear focus, intensity, and expeditiously, to minimize a child’s exposure to risk. The operating room is no place for dithering or dawdling. My own strategy in trying to accomplish that is through a detailed visualization of what I am going to be doing, in advance.
