Lower Extremity Neuroma Cases

Nerve compression and injury are common, yet frequently overlooked, causes for pain in the lower extremity. Akin to the upper extremity, several natural points of potential compression exist, and the superficial location of sensory nerves particularly lends them to injury. The diagnosis of a neuropathic source, the specific nerve(s) involved, and the location of compression/injury are easily discerned by a combination of patient history, physical exam, and nerve blocks. Surgical treatment is highly effective in relieving the neuropathic pain by decompression or neurectomy. Recent advancements in treatment of the distal cut end of the nerve have led to significant improvements in the effectiveness of pain relief and reductions in recurrence. These include RPNI, DSI, and TMR. Physicians and patients will benefit from further education regarding causes and surgical treatments of neuropathic pain, as the diagnosis is straightforward and the results are excellent.
