Land Tenure and Vulnerability in Lebanon and Iraq: A Comparative Study

Despite the fact that Lebanon and Iraq are of different sizes; yet they share a set of characteristics, emphasizing the significance of this comparison. One of the main commonalities is that both countries were part of the Ottoman empire, which has its influence on the land administration system till today. Of course, the common history, language and religion have their influence on today’s culture of both countries, which consequently affects the land management system, with all its challenges and problems in both countries. This chapter discusses land tenure in both countries, with special mention to minorities and vulnerable groups, including women, IDPs (Internal Displaced People), refugees, minorities, and their position within that system. The following table gives a short profile for each of the two countries.
