Anarchy

Anarchy looks at two types of incursions into the democratic process from those working to effect radical change from inside and outside the system. Using Monster Raving Loony and The Angry Brigade as the basis of analysis, this chapter shows how Graham uses the character of David SutchSutch, David to disrupt existing political structures while advocating for a new, inclusive form of politics, while The Angry Brigade compares an anarchist group with the police unit tasked with apprehending them. It argues that while anarchy has an essential, often violent, power to command public interest, it is short-lived with Graham restoring democratic governance and conventionality that makes long-lasting change impossible. The final part of this analysis examines anarchic theatre styles that Graham applies to the writing and dramatic construction of these works and the awareness of his own authorial voice in determining what happens to these characters.
