A Problem-Based Learning for the Study of Materials for Construction

Drawing inspiration from an iconic sculpture, a problem-based learning (PBL) approach has been crafted for the investigation of construction materials within the Technical Architecture Degree program. Within the PBL framework, students independently engage in “exploring” a problem introduced by the instructor. Throughout the process of resolving this problem, they encounter and address essential curricular objectives. The chosen PBL scenario is intricately linked to the Comb of the Wind sculpture, a masterpiece by the globally renowned sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Specifically tailored to investigate the physical and mechanical properties of rocks and metals, this PBL aims to guide students toward achieving the learning objectives of the subject through hypothetical problems embedded in the sculpture. This PBL methodology demands a heightened level of student engagement compared to traditional methods. Therefore, the design not only considers a situation-problem relevant to the future professionals’ practice but also ensures its societal significance to enhance student motivation. The students not only gain a more profound comprehension of the concepts but also develop the ability to perceive materials through a knowledgeable lens, transcending their roles as mere users. This approach aligns with the evolving paradigms in higher education.
