Mobile Instruments for Storing Information

The second category of scriptural instruments includes written texts whereby the princedom aimed at expanding its reach to various areas of social life, from the identity of individuals to the trading of merchandise, medicines and gunpowder. This was also true of registers—which I discussed in the previous chapter—just that they were meant to be immobile instruments for storing information deposited in the central and county chancelleries.
