TURNING UP3: A Student Approach to Active Learning

In this chapter, we are going to look at an approach to active learning which can make a significant difference to how you learn and how much you learn. As we have already explored, in third level education, it is necessary to be more independent and organised in your learning as meeting coursework requirements and deadlines become your responsibility. In your classes, you are presented with ideas, theories, discussions and different learning activities to build your understanding and to encourage you to question and explore your educational practice. Outside scheduled classes you are guided to important resources that you need to investigate as part of your coursework. In a nutshell, you are required to be active in your learning. This means that it’s what you do that matters most when it comes to your learning and in this chapter, we ask you to turn up for your learning.
