摘要

It is beyond doubt that practical utility has always been and continues to be the basic driving force of academic development and that the content of subjects taught in schools also used to be determined exclusively by practical considerations. However, the situation has never been straightforward and school subjects have never been exclusively of practical utility. For example, the geometry course in the curriculum of former higher elementary schools had hardly any practical application and was kept in situ exclusively for its general educational value.
